    Keiner konnte das Böse so gut darstellen wie Hieronymus Bosch (1450- 1516). Seine an Wimmelbücher für Erwachsene erinnernden Darstellungen sind voller Bestien, Anspielungen und Symbole. Symbole werden in der bildenden Kunst zwar bereits seit der Prähistorik verwendet, aber anders als bei Symptomen wie „…wo Rauch ist, ist Feuer“ besteht zwischen dem Symbol und seiner Bedeutung jedoch keine direkte, auf den Symbolgehalt hinweisende Beziehung. Das Symbol besitzt seine bestimmte Bedeutung nur aufgrund von Konventionen. Mit dem Spracherwerb lernen wir im Kindesalter gleichzeitig die Symbolsprache.
