“The Last Supper” at the Olympic Paris Games 2024 – Was it a parody or a coincidence?
The recent opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was marred by controversy regarding Christian-related concerns with the remembrance of Leonardo da Vinci’s painting – The Last Supper. First of all, let’s have a look at this masterpiece.
“The Last Supper” is one of the most celebrated and significant works of art in history, created by the Italian Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci between 1495 and 1498. This iconic mural, located in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, depicts the moment Jesus announces that one of his disciples will betray him, capturing the intense emotional reactions of each apostle.

Leonardo’s mastery is evident in the composition of “The Last Supper.” The mural measures 460 cm × 880 cm (15 ft × 29 ft) and is painted on the end wall of the convent’s dining hall. Unlike traditional frescoes, Leonardo employed a tempera-on-stone technique, mixing oil and tempera on a dry wall, which allowed him to work more slowly and incorporate finer details. However, this method has made the painting more susceptible to deterioration over time.
Leonardo meticulously crafted the expressions and body language of the apostles to convey their shock and dismay at Jesus’ revelation. The apostles are arranged in four groups of three, with Jesus centrally placed, creating a sense of symmetry and focus. His calm demeanor contrasts with the agitated reactions of the apostles, emphasizing the gravity of the moment.
Each apostle’s gesture and expression are unique, contributing to the narrative. For example, Judas, the betrayer, is depicted clenching a small bag, symbolizing the silver he received for his betrayal, and recoiling in shadow, highlighting his guilt and isolation. In contrast, the other apostles display a range of emotions from surprise and disbelief to anger and concern.

Leonardo’s use of perspective in “The Last Supper” was groundbreaking. He employed a single vanishing point directly behind Jesus’ head, drawing the viewer’s eye to the central figure and enhancing the three-dimensionality of the space. This innovative use of linear perspective creates an illusion of depth, making the scene appear as an extension of the refectory.
The painting’s composition and emotional depth have profoundly influenced countless artists and remain a reference point for depictions of biblical scenes. “The Last Supper” stands as a testament to Leonardo’s genius, blending artistic innovation with profound storytelling.
Over the centuries, “The Last Supper” has faced numerous challenges, including environmental damage, attempts at restoration, and the ravages of time. Significant restoration efforts in the late 20th century aimed to preserve the painting’s integrity and bring out its original details, though some aspects of Leonardo’s work have been lost.

Despite these challenges, “The Last Supper” endures as a masterpiece of Renaissance art, attracting millions of visitors and continuing to inspire and captivate audiences worldwide. Its blend of technical brilliance, emotional depth, and historical significance secures its place as one of Leonardo da Vinci’s most extraordinary achievements.
Secondly, let’s talk about the controversial opening ceremony of Olympic Games. The show took place on a bridge over the Seine River and featured models, dancers, fashion celebrities, and drag queens. Everyone gathered around a huge table that also a catwalk stage. People seated on either side were excited to the music while the models displayed collections from designers.
A woman wearing an exquisite blue dress and a huge silver hat that resembled a halo stood in the middle with Drag Queens. To heighten the atmosphere, the stage featured a nearly naked man painted all blue and reclining on a massive food dish. This individual is Philippe Katerine, a French singer and actor. According to the organizers, Katerine’s transformation into Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, feasts, and theatre, was intended to raise awareness of the absurdity of human brutality.

Most viewers, nevertheless, did not share that sentiment. They believed that because it resembled a reenactment of The Last Supper, the group of artists was making fun of Christianity. Many believed that the woman was the embodiment of Jesus since the Drag Queens stood in for the apostles of Jesus and the hat on her head resembled the halo frequently seen in paintings of Jesus.

The video of the opening ceremony is no longer available. Despite the organizing committee for Paris 2024’s apology to Catholics and other Christian groups, many articles and social media posts remain critical of the organizer. What are your opinions on this?
