With Tom Cruise’s presence, the Olympic flag was untraditionally passed to Los Angeles, the following host city in 2028. To accept the flag from Simone Biles, the actor had to jump off the edge of the outdoor stadium and land on stage.

Following the opening ceremony, some members of the creative team, including director Jolly, were placed under additional security due to threats made against them online.
