    L’Art du graffiti

    Le mouvement graffiti commença avec les expositions à la galerie Fashion Moda, à la Fun Gallery, au Mudd Club, et autres espaces ouverts au début des années 1980. Puis il s’étendit aux galeries établies de SoHo, de la 57e Rue, et du Salon de l’Art de Bâle. Il prit fin, quelques années plus tard, quand l’attention des critiques, des marchands d’art et des collectionneurs se porta vers de nouveaux engouements. Il existe nombre de raisons qui expliquent que les graffeurs du métro n’ont jamais reçu l’attention sérieuse donnée à leurs pairs.     How does one gain immortality these days? No, this is actually a serious question! For the Ancient Egyptians, they took the important person’s corpse, removed the intestines and the other major decomposable parts (excepting the heart of course… every rookie embalmer knows that!), dried the body out with natron*, stuffed it with sawdust, wrapped it in linen, placed it in a couple of coffins, and then put it inside a large sarcophagus**. Easy. Then, they left the now-mummified body, erected a gigantic marking stone (obviously why the pyramids were built), and voila: today practically everybody and their grandmother knows the name of Tutankhamen.  Not bad for a 5,000 year-old mummy!…

    Let me steer you away from the realm of art for a moment, and instead let me ask you to consider the many love/hate relationships that we so often have.  Take chocolate for instance; LOVE chocolate, HATE myself afterwards (for all those who have consumed an entire large Galaxy bar in one sitting, you know what I mean….).  And then there’s Reality Television.  You know it’s wasting your life, minute by minute, and yet it can be so voyeuristically compelling.  And finally: marmite.  Of course, the old ‘you love it or you hate it’ phrase was seemingly created for this food product.
