    Der in Kalkutta geborene bengalische Dichter, Künstler und Philosoph Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) steht wie kaum ein anderer für das Indien des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts. In das ehemalige indische Großreich, das nun der britischen Krone angehörte, geboren, engagierte sich Tagore als Vordenker der indischen Moderne und Fürstreiter des indischen Nationalismus nicht nur im Kampf gegen die britische Kolonialherrschaft, sondern stand auch mit den Größen seiner Zeit wie Einstein und Ghandi in Kontakt.
