    Caravaggio und der Caravaggismus

    Die meisten erfolgreichen künstlerischen Werdegänge sind geprägt von Gönnern, Kennern, Ausbildung, Rezeption, Kreativität und Auftraggebern. Dies gilt auch für eine Gruppe von Künstlern, die es zu Beginn des 17. Jahrhunderts, traditionell der Ausbildung entsprechend, nach Rom zog, und damit in eine Stadt, die zu jener Zeit von einem tendenziell normzerstörenden Künstler geprägt war – Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). Mit seinen fesselnden Kompositionen, einem radikalen Naturalismus und einer zuvor nicht gekannten Lichtregie entwickelt er einen ihm eigenen Stil. Figuren werden mithilfe der schlaglichtartigen Beleuchtung modelliert, der verdunkelte Hintergrund wird undefinierbar und so die Szene dramatisch zugespitzt.     Michelangelo da Caravaggio – what a drunken, jealous, hot-headed mess. I’m sure if psychiatric hospitals existed in the late 1500s, he would have spent time in one – and probably lived a bit longer because of it. Today it seems artists (mostly actors and singers) encourage us commoners to “feel our crazy”, you know, to see where it takes us. But Caravaggio wouldn’t have even made it to even 39 were he alive today if he kept up his shenanigans. Fun to party with, perhaps, but no one you could possibly (read: should) take too seriously.
