    The Brown Fairy

    June 30, 2014 / 0 Comments

Nicknamed ‘la fée brune’ (the brown fairy), opium may be less colourful than its friend absinthe, ‘the green fairy’, but it is no less intriguing. In the glorious years of the Parisian belle époque and then afterwards in the Golden Twenties (or as the French called them, les années folles, the ‘mad years’) opium use seized the artistic circles of society. Infamous opium users include Charles Baudelaire and André Malraux, who…

Comme le prouve le tableau d’Édouard Manet ci-dessous, ce siècle a été avant tout celui du renouveau et des chocs visuels pour le grand public : une femme nue au milieu d’hommes habillés, pure…

    Centennial Vortexes

    September 27, 2012 / 0 Comments

You can blame it on my being an emotional woman if you’d like, I take full responsibility for that, but when I discovered the Wallraf-Richardtz-Museum’s intention to reunite some of the pieces from the 1912 Sonderbund Exhibition of Post-Impressionism through German Expressionism, featuring Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Munch, Picasso, Macke, Nolde, Schiele, Signac, etc., I got a bit teary-eyed. Pieces that have been separated (and sometimes out of view) will be reunited in Cologne until year’s end. It’s reminiscent of one’s days in University and coming back so many years later (clearly not 100) to see how much you’ve changed – or in the case of these paintings and sculptures,…
