Barock oder Moderne – der Versuch einer Definition?
Die Kunstgeschichte hat immer versucht, jeder Epoche und jedem Stil einen Namen und eine Definition zu geben. Jahrtausende, Jahrhunderte, Jahrzehnte – aus Epochen wurden „Strömungen“. Historisch-politische Umschwünge hatten zumeist auch eine Richtungsänderung in der Kunst zur Folge, und so brachte das 17. Jahrhundert, geprägt vom Dreißigjährigen Krieg (1618-1648) und dem Absolutismus, die Kunst des Barock hervor, derer sich später auch die Aufklärung bedienen sollte. Überschwängliche, runde und ausladende Formen, ein Übermaß an Schmuck, dramatische Lichtregie, Dynamik, Symmetrie, Repräsentation und das Bewusstsein der Vergänglichkeit definieren im Allgemeinen die Architektur, Skulptur und Malerei des Barock. It started under the influence of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy during the 1600s.
