Shelley’s Art Musings – International Women’s Day – Celebrating Female Artists

    March 8, 2022 / 0 Comments

There are still huge worlds apart for many women across the globe in areas of work and pay, acknowledgements and accolades. Female artists are still outweighed by male artists in most contemporary galleries. We are very used to seeing the female form as the centrepiece but usually painted from the male perspective.

Shelley’s Art Musings: Spotlight on Vincent Van Gogh

The world is a pretty glum place at the moment, isn’t it? COVID-19, social distancing, self-isolation and a media frenzy, which is enough to send the sanest of us to a brink of depression, which is probably making you look at things a little different. Appreciating smaller things, like the fact that spring is on the way and the first signs of life rejuvenation are in the air, or perhaps you are belated to wake up and the mornings are a little lighter. Depression was a common state for Van Gogh, which is very hard for anyone to understand the depths of another’s mental state, but as it is his birthday,…

"One can argue the merits and the future of the new decorative art movement, but there is no denying it currently reigns triumphant over all Europe and in every English-speaking country outside Europe; all it needs now is management, and this is up to men of taste.” (Jean Lahor, Paris 1901)

    A Little Lesson in Art…

    March 8, 2014 / 0 Comments

Even the most ardent art lovers will admit that the subject can be a little… overwhelming. Take a stroll through the halls of the Louvre and though it is incredible, sometimes it is a little TOO incredible – after a while you just need to sit down. Edward Hopper, painter of the Nighthawks, is a celebrated American painter, but his international repute is an iota of…
