    „Bedenke, dass du sterben wirst.”

    Der Tod und das Sterben in der Kunst – in den verschiedenen Epochen der Kunstgeschichte beschäftigten sich Künstler in ihren Werken mit dem Sterben und dem Tod, vor allem auch mit ihrem eigenen Ableben. Mittels unterschiedlichster Vanitas-Symbole veranschaulichten Künstler ihre eigene Sterblichkeit und hielten diese in ihrem Bildern auf eine einprägsame Weise dem Betrachter vor Augen. Von daher benennt man diese Darstellungen nach einem religiösen Leitsatz „Memento Mori – Bedenke, dass du sterben wirst”. So findet man das Memento Mori-Sujet als Stilmotiv immer wieder in der Kunst, mehrheitlich in Stillleben als in anderen Genren.
