Happy Birthday, Jean-Honoré Fragonard!

Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732–1806), a pivotal figure of the French Rococo movement, is celebrated for his exuberant and sensuous paintings, capturing the carefree decadence of the French aristocracy. Best known for works like “The Swing,” Fragonard’s art is characterised by fluid brushwork, vibrant colours, and dynamic compositions, embodying the frivolous and erotic spirit of his time.

Fragonard’s paintings often depicted scenes of love, romance, and leisure, capturing the essence of the aristocratic lifestyle of his time. His works are known for their delicate brushwork, pastel colors, and intricate compositions, which convey a sense of movement and spontaneity.

One of Fragonard’s most famous works is “The Swing” (1767), which epitomizes the Rococo spirit with its frothy, lighthearted portrayal of a young woman being pushed on a swing by her lover. The painting is celebrated for its sense of frivolity and eroticism, as well as its masterful handling of light and color.

In addition to his playful genre scenes, Fragonard was also a skilled portraitist and landscape painter. His portraits capture the personalities and emotions of his subjects with sensitivity and insight, while his landscapes evoke a sense of pastoral tranquility and harmony.

Despite his success during his lifetime, Fragonard fell out of favor after the French Revolution, when the Rococo style was replaced by the more austere Neoclassical aesthetic. He spent his later years in relative obscurity, focusing mainly on commissions for private clients.
