Shelley’s Art Scandal: Banksy has been Monkeying Around
“Devolved Parliament” 2009 Banksy I don’t think that it has escaped anyone’s attention that currently British politics is in a state of complete and utter mayhem. I can honestly say, being English I have never been so dismayed at those who are leading our country or watched a completely shambolic display from those who are supposed to be the voice of the people and acting on their behalf, disregard the best for their country, over their own agenda. With this in mind, it is a completely topical sale that has thrown Banksy’s seemingly prophetic painting “Devolved Parliament” into the limelight. There have been varying reactions to this sale, which…

Vantablack- The blackest black ever
In 2015, sculptor Anish Kapoor bought the black colour from Surrey NanoSystems. Not just any black: the Vantablack black which has specific chemical properties that do not occur in nature. This black, which was created for military use, is so deep that the volumes can no longer be distinguished. So it’s an ideal camouflage. Basically, this event is not new insofar as, in 1960, Yves Klein had deposited a blue colour in his name (the International Klein Blue or IKBlue). Nevertheless, Yves Klein had only legally appropriated the chemical recipe for this particular blue and, unlike Anish Kapoor’s Vantablack, everyone has the right to freely use the IKBlue. What is…

Shelley’s art scandal – Gucci Jumper in Racial Slur
Art comes in many forms, and by the sheer definition art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, so it makes sense that the world of art would encompass fashion. I don’t usually lean to the world of fashion for an art scandal, as I would be writing an article every other week if that was the case, but this one really caught my attention. During the autumn/winter season of 2018, Gucci released a jumper which seemed gathered social media attention at an alarming rate. It seems crazy that 98 years after the first Gucci shop was opened, by its founder Guccio, known for their craftsmanship…

Shelley’s Scandal of the Month – Spotlight on Damien Hirst.
Some artists are notoriously controversial in whatever they do, be it their artwork itself, or the way they interact with the public. Damien Hirst appears to have both of these areas covered, and this is his selling point. Before I saw an exhibition of Hirst’s work, I am happy to admit that I wasn’t a fan, as I felt that his work was quite crass and showy. My opinion changed on actually seeing the work. There is something about walking between a cow that has been cut in half, with a calf in its gestation period. It speaks on another level about the fragility of life. There is also something…

Shelley’s Art Scandal – Andres Serrano Religious Redemption
It’s odd isn’t it, we all enjoy freedom of speech, probably without really registering that we are partaking of it. The fact that we can freely express our views is probably one of the most taken for granted rights we have, yet, I see maybe taking offence to things on a regular basis, without thinking by doing it they are in turn taking away another’s right to have their own freedom of speech. I am not really talking about disagreeing with things in a logical and well-rounded argument type of way, as that is healthy, I am more thinking about the wanton destruction of art or destructive protests to try…
