Debo admitir que cuando, hace no mucho, mi jefe me nombró a Caillebotte, no sabía de quién me estaba hablando, mucho menos su nacionalidad o el movimiento estético al que pertenecía (y no digamos cómo escribirlo). Pero Google existe por una razón, así que hice una búsqueda y me quedé sorprendida al ver que, aunque no conocía el nombre del artista, las imágenes me eran muy familiares. You know what one of my favourite movies of all time is? Closer. It’s dark, it’s dirty, it’s intimate, it’s lonely, it’s sad, it’s beautiful, it’s true. “Anna’s” photography exhibit is one I would have visited again and again – you know, if it had been real – especially the image of “Alice”. A l’époque, Gustave Caillebotte est considéré comme un grand mécène du mouvement impressionniste qui, grâce l’héritage reçu de son père, eut la possibilité de se procurer les oeuvres de ses amis impressionnistes et de payer le loyer de l’atelier de Monet. Ce n’est qu’après sa mort que Caillebotte est reconnu comme l’un des grands maîtres de l’Impressionisme en plus de son statut de grand maître financier ( il venait régulièrement en aide à ses amis en les soutenant financièrement). Caillebotte, un impresionista con calidad fotográfica
Gustave Caillebotte falleció demasiado joven. Su vida transcurrió entre 1848 y 1894, en esa convulsa época de transformaciones, conflictos y replanteamientos que fue el siglo XIX. Estudió derecho, pero rechazó su formación como jurista para dedicarse a retratar la vida moderna francesa y a pintar sensaciones junto a los pioneros del arte impresionista. La herencia que recibió tras el fallecimiento de su padre le permitió convertirse en el gran mecenas de Degas, Manet, Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Cézanne y Sisley, entre otros, cuyas obras legó al Estado francés. Caillebotte: Sugar Daddy of Impressionism
During his time, Gustave Caillebotte was known as a great supporter of the Impressionist movement. He had quite a bit of money due to a hefty allowance and inheritance from his father, which allowed him to purchase the works of his fellow Impressionists, subsidise several exhibitions, and even pay the rent for Monet’s studio. It wasn’t until after his death that Caillebotte was finally recognised as one of the great masters of Impressionism rather than simply a piggy bank for his friends.
