Arguably, most forms of art worth lengthy discussion have a bit of madness behind them, whether it is a painting, film, or novel. Personally, I find that my creative work suffers a bit when everything in my life feels completely balanced. Think about the mental states of various actors, painters, and authors. Off of the top of my head, I can come up with Tilda Swinson, Tom Cruise, Charlie Sheen, Hemingway, Tolstoy, Poe, Wolfe, Caravaggio, (cough) Hitler… I could list tons and tons, but I’d much rather hear from you. But madness is rather subjective, isn’t it?

Keiner konnte das Böse so gut darstellen wie Hieronymus Bosch (1450- 1516). Seine an Wimmelbücher für Erwachsene erinnernden Darstellungen sind voller Bestien, Anspielungen und Symbole. Symbole werden in der bildenden Kunst zwar bereits seit der Prähistorik verwendet, aber anders als bei Symptomen wie „…wo Rauch ist, ist Feuer“ besteht zwischen dem Symbol und seiner Bedeutung jedoch keine direkte, auf den Symbolgehalt hinweisende Beziehung. Das Symbol besitzt seine bestimmte Bedeutung nur aufgrund von Konventionen. Mit dem Spracherwerb lernen wir im Kindesalter gleichzeitig die Symbolsprache. Wie oft standen wir während unseres Studiums der Kunstgeschichte bei den sogenannten „Übungen vor Originalen“ vor christlichen Meisterwerken und gingen vor unseren inneren Augen das „Who‘s Who“ der Kunstgeschichte durch. Auf einer Darstellung der Thronenden Madonna beispielsweise sind im Bildzentrum auf einem Thron sitzend die Gottesmutter und auf ihrem Schoß das Jesuskind dargestellt. Befinden sich weitere Personen auf dem Werk – was keine Ausnahme, sondern eher der Regelfall ist – wird es schon schwieriger. Solo puedo decir que estoy francamente impresionada por la campaña publicitaria que ha lanzado el Getty para promocionar la muestra dedicada al recién restaurado retablo del maestro renacentista holandés Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574), «Drama and Devotion: Heemskerck’s “Ecce Homo” Altarpiece from Warsaw»… Contratar a una devota y bienintencionada octogenaria para «retocar» un eccehomomenor en una pequeña iglesia española con un resultado tan ridículamente jocoso que se convierta en el tema del momento y que ponga los Cristos y las restauraciones de arte de primerísima actualidad… No puedo más que rendirme a los pies de ese genial e increíblemente retorcido publicista en cuyas manos Internet es poco más que una redecilla…

I’m going to take this opportunity to get back on my high horse about the restoration and conservation of art for posterity’s sake. J. Paul Getty Museum, you’re doing it right!
