Tu as rêvé de quoi cette nuit ?

    January 9, 2014 / 0 Comments

Tu as rêvé de quoi ?

    Masculine/ Masculine?

    December 4, 2013 / 0 Comments

When we hear ‘nude’, for most of us the image of a female body would immediately spring to mind.  One of Titian’s fleshy, languorous beauties perhaps, or self-possessed Olympia and her hostile black cat. This is unsurprising, considering the proliferation of female nudes dominating art in the recent centuries.  Before the 19th century, however, the male nude was considered much more important to artists.  The male body was thought more attractive and the more important of the human forms. So much so that looking at many works from the Italian Renaissance, you would be forgiven for seeing men with a couple of breasts stuck on for fun, rather than a…

    A Dream Deferred

    November 18, 2013 / 1 Comment

Dreams are as commonplace as breathing, but as elusive as the air. Although practically everyone dreams on a nightly basis, very few people remember or understand their dreams. Looking at paintings from the Renaissance, it is perceivable that the interpretation of dreams predates Freud. Many paintings portray people currently sleeping, suddenly waking up or being woken up, or dreaming. The current exhibition at the Musee du Luxembourg focuses on the little discussed aspect of sleep and dreams in the art of the Renaissance. Painters such as Veronese and Hieronymus Bosch depicted their subjects’ dreams in several of their paintings. But while Veronese used dreaming as a state to reach religious…

    Süße Träume

    November 6, 2013 / 0 Comments

“Give a Girl the Right Shoes, and She Can Conquer the World.”

    January 22, 2013 / 0 Comments

    –          Marilyn Monroe* Shoes! Glorious Shoes! (If I may be as bold as to twist Oliver’s words a little…) As nearly every teenage girl and woman will tell you, shoes are fantastically important. Mainly, because they’re just fantastic. But think about it, the love of a good or pretty shoe (the best combine beauty and comfort) is reflected throughout history. For the purposes of this blog, history includes fairytales… Where would Cinderella be without her glass slipper? Where would Puss be without his boots? Hermes would have been a great deal less effective as a messenger god without his winged sandals. And the Old woman who lived in a shoe?…

    Ecce Homo

    October 9, 2012 / 0 Comments

Leonardo da Vinci: Jack of Everything

    July 20, 2012 / 0 Comments

I could make another reference to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and discuss how, both Leonardo the man and the turtle are the eldest, wisest, and most level-headed of their pairings; however, part of that would be false (Donatello [the sculptor] was older by 66 years) and I’d have no way of proving the rest. Jack of all trades, master of… all trades. Leonardo da Vinci was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. His friends described him to have extraordinary powers of invention, incredible strength and generosity, boundless grace, an infinite mind, a majestic spirit, and in addition to all of…
