Sun, Sand, and Style: The Evolution of the Bikini
The bikini undoubtedly owed a large part of its success to the cinema – which actually featured it at first only because it was scandalous, and scandal filled seats. But it was quite right that there should have been some hesitation over it, for Hollywood had to be careful: initially it banned the bikini from the screen as “too corrupting and immoral.”

Hot Summer time, Hot Bikini
On July 1, 1946, at 9 o’clock in the morning, an atomic bomb exploded with a force of 23,000 tons above Bikini, a coral atoll in the South Pacific hitherto virtually unheard of. More than six disarmed warships of the Japanese and American fleets were sunk and more than twice that number were seriously damaged.

Shelley’s Art Scandal – THAT painting by Balthus…
Well… It’s been a while, hasn’t it… since I last wrote about scandalous art, so I thought I would make my come back with a big bang and investigate one of the most notorious and provocative paintings. We are now in an age, where we, thankfully, are becoming increasingly aware of consent, trying to stamp out acts against minors and ensuring adequate processes are in place to protect those who are not of an age to make decisions for themselves with clarity. This said, the processes are not infallible, and this doesn’t protect against cultural differences or just things that happen behind closed doors which go unreported. Obviously, in the…

Vantablack- The blackest black ever
In 2015, sculptor Anish Kapoor bought the black colour from Surrey NanoSystems. Not just any black: the Vantablack black which has specific chemical properties that do not occur in nature. This black, which was created for military use, is so deep that the volumes can no longer be distinguished. So it’s an ideal camouflage. Basically, this event is not new insofar as, in 1960, Yves Klein had deposited a blue colour in his name (the International Klein Blue or IKBlue). Nevertheless, Yves Klein had only legally appropriated the chemical recipe for this particular blue and, unlike Anish Kapoor’s Vantablack, everyone has the right to freely use the IKBlue. What is…

Happy Birthday to Gustave Courbet
President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Gustave Courbet, the painter of scandal: the Vendôme Column, the case of The woman with the Parrot, and The origin of the world. The text below is an excerpt of the book Gustave Courbet, written by Georges Riat, published by Parkstone International. Child of materialism and positivism, Courbet was without a doubt one of the most complex painters of the nineteenth century. Symbolising the rejection of traditions, Courbet did not hesitate to confront the public with the truth by liberating painting of conventional rules. He became from then on the leader of pictorial realism. The Vendôme Column At the end of the deliberation of the…
