Exhibition: Van Gogh & Japan
Date: From March 23 – June 24, 2018 Venue: Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Van Gogh created his own image of Japan by studying and reading about Japanese art, collecting and copying prints, and discussing their aesthetic qualities with other artists. His encounter with Japanese prints helped him to give his work a new direction. The exhibition will demonstrate, step by step, how Van Gogh bent the Japanese example to his will. In this way he defined himself as a modern artist and positioned himself opposite such artists as Emile Bernard and Paul Gauguin. Emil Nolde: In search of the lost Primitivism
Emil Nolde was born Emil Hansen. His attachment to the land of the northern German countryside, and especially to the sea, was given philosophical meaning and a kind of portentousness through the filter of the völkisch ideas he gleaned from writers such as Julius Langbehn. Nolde often spoke of the struggle for what he called “das Heimische” (roughly translated, the “native regional”) in art. However, he also knew and loved his northern region from first-hand experience. His paintings of the sea and landscapes of Schleswig-Holstein therefore emerged from close familiarity as well as the vividness of Nolde’s imagination. Date: From August 1, 2017 to March 18, 2018 Location: South African National Gallery “As the scratchings on the 70 000-year-old Blombos ochre reveal, that non-figurative mark-marking long predates the very notion of ‘art’ itself. While abstraction’s ‘invention’ in the early 20th century by European avant-garde is now being celebrated, its traditions are ancient. Resisted in colonial South Africa, and belatedly accepted as part of the ‘international’ mainstream of modern art, disillusionment later arose as to its political relevance.
