Francisco de Goya (1746-1828), bekannt als „Künstler des Schreckens“, beschäftigte sich eindringlich mit den sozialen und politischen Umständen seiner Zeit und fand dafür teilweise drastische und ungeheuerliche Ausdrucksweisen in seinen Gemälden und Druckgrafiken. Tea ceremonies, bullet trains arriving to the exact second, intricately dressed, immaculate geisha and the importance of keeping face: these common images of Japan conjure up the notion of a highly-controlled and conservative society. Graphic images of enormous penises and a woman being pleasured by an octopus are not, perhaps, what you might expect. Hablar de Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, para mí, es como volver a casa. Siendo de donde soy (Zaragoza) Goya ha estado presente en mi vida desde mi más tierna infancia. Desde el fresco del Pilar al retrato de familia de Carlos IV pasando por los murales de la Cartuja de Aula Dei o los dibujos para la Real Fábrica de Tapices y, mucho más tarde, las estatuas de los majos que pusieron frente a la Lonja de mi ciudad natal. This aspect of his personality may be tracked back to his time studying under a master popular with Spanish Royalty of the time.
