Shelley’s Art Scandal – Spotlight on Allen Jones

    December 7, 2021 / 0 Comments

During the 60s, Jones worked on the three pieces of art which gained him the controversial notoriety which he is known for. These were “Chair”, “Table” and “Hat Stand”. These are sculptures which were designed by Jones, then cast in clay, finally finished by a company that made mannequins. Each set of three were duplicated six times, which were completed in 1969.

Shelley’s Art Scandal – When Does Art Become Pornography?

    May 25, 2020 / 0 Comments

This subject is a fine line one in my opinion.  There are plenty of paintings from through the ages that show naked women lounging around displaying their femininity, equally there is an abundance of statues which show men standing around, wrestling or hunting naked.  These are usually considered classical art, because someone has taken the time to paint or sculpt them in fine detail, where as now, if it was a photo of the same image, it would probably be considered lewd or pornographic. I can remember, way back in the 90’s, listening to the comedian Bill Hicks on his “Relentless” tour, and there is a piece of that stand…

Shelley’s Art Scandal – Women and the art world – why are there so few?

    March 12, 2020 / 0 Comments

Hopefully, it didn’t escape anyone’s attention that it was International Women’s Day on the 8th March.  This day has been created to try and help eliminate discrimination against women across the world.  It is really hard to think that in this day and age that this still exists, but horrendous acts still happen towards women all over the world, but discrimination doesn’t have to be large awful acts.  I recently read a book by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie called “We should all be feminists”, where she describes a situation where she tips a guy is Lagos who parks their car.  When returning to the car, Adichie hands the money to the…

Shelley’s Art Scandal – THAT painting by Balthus…

    February 16, 2020 / 0 Comments

Well… It’s been a while, hasn’t it… since I last wrote about scandalous art, so I thought I would make my come back with a big bang and investigate one of the most notorious and provocative paintings. We are now in an age, where we, thankfully, are becoming increasingly aware of consent, trying to stamp out acts against minors and ensuring adequate processes are in place to protect those who are not of an age to make decisions for themselves with clarity.  This said, the processes are not infallible, and this doesn’t protect against cultural differences or just things that happen behind closed doors which go unreported.  Obviously, in the…

Shelley’s Art Scandal: Banksy has been Monkeying Around

    October 22, 2019 / 0 Comments

“Devolved Parliament” 2009 Banksy I don’t think that it has escaped anyone’s attention that currently British politics is in a state of complete and utter mayhem.  I can honestly say, being English I have never been so dismayed at those who are leading our country or watched a completely shambolic display from those who are supposed to be the voice of the people and acting on their behalf, disregard the best for their country, over their own agenda. With this in mind, it is a completely topical sale that has thrown Banksy’s seemingly prophetic painting “Devolved Parliament” into the limelight.  There have been varying reactions to this sale, which…
