Shelley’s Art Scandal – When Does Art Become Pornography?
This subject is a fine line one in my opinion. There are plenty of paintings from through the ages that show naked women lounging around displaying their femininity, equally there is an abundance of statues which show men standing around, wrestling or hunting naked. These are usually considered classical art, because someone has taken the time to paint or sculpt them in fine detail, where as now, if it was a photo of the same image, it would probably be considered lewd or pornographic. I can remember, way back in the 90’s, listening to the comedian Bill Hicks on his “Relentless” tour, and there is a piece of that stand…

Enjoy the holiday season by reading a good art book
The holiday season is the best time for family reunions, for giving gifts, and for showing attachment and love for our loved ones. Offering an art book that recalls the history of Christianity and reading it on a cold snowy night is the ideal gift and the height of pleasure. Here are some ideas: Christ in Art Since the dawn of Christianity, artists have been fascinated and stirred by the figure of Christ. His likeness appears in frescoes on the walls of catacombs that date from Roman times; he is featured in the stained glass windows of Gothic churches, and he can be found in various forms in today’s pop culture.…

Ivan Aivazovsky (1817-1900) – the Russian Painter of Water
“The movement of natural elements cannot be captured by the brush: to paint lightning, a gust of wind, or the splash of a wave from nature is inconceivable.” Ivan Aivazovsky The text below is the excerpt of the book Ivan Aivazovsky, written by Victoria Charles, published by Parkstone International. Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky has been one of Russia’s most popular artists for over a hundred years, enjoying greater fame in his youth than most artists do in a lifetime. He was well-known amongst artists and the general public who adored his talent, and his celebrity spread quite quickly. Near the start of his artistic career, he was elected to various foreign…

Free and easy: how European drawing finally caught up with China
Recently I was looking at Renaissance drawings with a Chinese friend. The works we were looking at were vast and made with a complex mix of coloured media. She explained that it’s hard to describe drawings like this in Chinese because there is just one word for “drawing”, which simply suggests a flowing sketch. China’s art has always been based on this kind of free drawing, while European art has a long history of being tightly disciplined and studious. Today, as this year’s Jerwood drawing prize shows, the west has caught up with China: this drawing is so open, free and unpredictable it can be almost anything – from the…
