La solitude poétique de l’homme confrontée à « l’American way of life » chez Hopper

    December 2, 2022 / 0 Comments

Die poetische Einsamkeit des Menschen gegenüber dem “American Way of Life” bei Hopper

    December 1, 2022 / 0 Comments

The poetic solitude of man confronted to the “American way of life” in Hopper

    November 29, 2022 / 0 Comments

Created using cold colours and inhabited by anonymous characters, Hopper’s paintings also symbolically reflect the Great Depression. Through a series of different reproductions (etchings, watercolours, and oil-on-canvas paintings), as well as thematic and artistic analysis, the author sheds new light on the enigmatic and tortured world of this outstanding figure...

    Instantanés de l’Amérique.

    December 2, 2013 / 0 Comments

    No Room in Hollywood

    October 22, 2013 / 0 Comments

There is no doubt that Hollywood dominates the global film industry. Occasionally, popular films from other countries gain international notoriety like the French film Amélie or the Swedish film Let the Right One In, but those are rare instances. While the United States dominates the film industry, the rest of the world, mainly Europe, dominates in art. The U.S. does have renowned artists but not as renowned as Europe.  Even as an American, I find it difficult to name fellow artistic countrymen, but I can easily rattle off several European artists. Edward Hopper, painter of the Nighthawks, is a celebrated American painter, but his international repute is an iota of…

Vampires: dark and evil or sparkly and romantic?

    May 14, 2013 / 0 Comments

When thinking of dark romanticism, I am plagued with thoughts of dark, sultry mystery. Especially encompassing the supernatural, dark romanticism is essentially the humanising of all things evil and hellish. This includes vampires, werewolves, ghouls, devils, the whole gamut. Having just come off of a most epic two month Buffy-binge, I get it. But authors like Stephanie Meyer, have taken what was once the essence of evil and torture and literally turned them into shiny, happy beings.

    La mirada de Hopper

    July 13, 2012 / 0 Comments

    Hopper: drudgery and dysthymia

    July 13, 2012 / 0 Comments

Edward Hopper is being celebrated with an exhibition dedicated to his life and works in the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, amassing an impressive 73 out of his 366 canvases. He would have hated this. Bitter as he was about the late recognition of his art, he avoided his own exhibitions, using them as a platform to get his paintings sold, in order to carry on living his simple and reclusive lifestyle. Hopper has to be the least fitting name for an artist as misanthropic as he. He was an introvert with a wry sense of humour, who would fall into great periods of melancholy, pierced on occasion by flashes of…
