Understanding Religion and Spirit in the art of Africa

    January 13, 2026 / 0 Comments

This journey reveals how African artists transform wood, clay, bronze, and fabric into living expressions of history, ritual, and imagination - showing African art not as decoration, but as a vital force within society.

    LESEN IN AFRIKA

    October 11, 2019 / 0 Comments

Ebooks – A vehicle of cultural transmission in Africa

    September 20, 2019 / 0 Comments

“The civilization of the twentieth century cannot be universal except by being a dynamic synthesis of all the cultural values of all civilizations. It will be monstrous unless it is seasoned with the salt of negritude, for it will be without the savour of humanity.” Leopold Sedar Senghor READING IN AFRICA When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” Until recently, African history, culture and traditions were conveyed more through speech than in writing— the transmission of oral literature from one generation to the next lies at the heart of culture and memory. Very often, local languages act as vehicles for the transmission of unique forms of…

    Die Kunst Afrikas

    June 18, 2018 / 0 Comments

Exhibition: Beyond Compare: Art from Africa Date: October 27, 2017 – December 31, 2019 Venue: Bode Museum, Berlin. Origin of the Negro Peoples of Africa It seems that the actual state of our knowledge does not permit us, as yet, to answer this question in a definitive or even a satisfactory manner. Undoubtedly, one would not have even asked the question if Africa were the only part of the world to possess Negroes. But such is not the case and without speaking, of course, of the countries where the advent of the Negro race has taken place only at a recent epoch, as the result of migrations which were generally…

    Learning from Africa

    July 3, 2013 / 0 Comments

Africa has long been a source of fascination for people from the West. From Cy Endfield’s 1964 classic film Zulu starring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker, to Disney’s The Lion King, from Elton John crooning The Circle of Life, to Shakira’s foot-tapping World Cup anthem This Time for Africa*, the land of our origins still maintains a deep hold over our thoughts and is firmly embedded into our culture. When we look at Africa, we see a myriad of possibilities, destinations, languages, cultures, politics, wildlife, levels of wealth and poverty, violence and peace, landscapes, and geography.
