Shelleys Kunstskandal – Wann wird Kunst zur Pornographie?

    June 10, 2020 / 0 Comments

Shelley’s Art Scandal – When Does Art Become Pornography?

    May 25, 2020 / 0 Comments

This subject is a fine line one in my opinion.  There are plenty of paintings from through the ages that show naked women lounging around displaying their femininity, equally there is an abundance of statues which show men standing around, wrestling or hunting naked.  These are usually considered classical art, because someone has taken the time to paint or sculpt them in fine detail, where as now, if it was a photo of the same image, it would probably be considered lewd or pornographic. I can remember, way back in the 90’s, listening to the comedian Bill Hicks on his “Relentless” tour, and there is a piece of that stand…

    Happy Birthday to Gustave Courbet

    July 3, 2019 / 0 Comments

President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Gustave Courbet, the painter of scandal: the Vendôme Column, the case of The woman with the Parrot, and The origin of the world. The text below is an excerpt of the book Gustave Courbet, written by Georges Riat, published by Parkstone International. Child of materialism and positivism, Courbet was without a doubt one of the most complex painters of the nineteenth century. Symbolising the rejection of traditions, Courbet did not hesitate to confront the public with the truth by liberating painting of conventional rules. He became from then on the leader of pictorial realism. The Vendôme Column At the end of the deliberation of the…

Gustave Courbet’s The Origin of the World – his clinically voyeuristic 1866 oil painting of a woman shown literally and solely as a sex object, with all distractions, such as her face, ruthlessly removed – hangs in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, opposite his far larger canvas A Burial at Ornans (1849–50). It is an incredibly powerful juxtaposition, an unforgettable double act. The small, yet white and bright and unavoidably shocking Origin looks across a shadowy space at the huge, dark, funeral scene, with its enigmatic rural faces gathered around the black void of a grave. If you could ask Courbet what he believed in, this display makes it plain…
