Ernst Ludwig Kirchner: Blues in the soul…
The self-appointed “leader” of the artists’ group Die Brücke (Bridge), founded in Dresden in 1905, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner was a key figure in the early development of German Expressionism. His first works show the influence of Impressionism, Post-impressionism and Jugendstil, but by about 1909, Kirchner was painting in a distinctive, expressive manner with bold, loose brushwork, vibrant and nonnaturalistic colours and heightened gestures. He worked in the studio from sketches made very rapidly from life, often from moving figures, from scenes of life out in the city or from the Die Brücke group’s trips to the countryside. Je ne sais pas vous, mais chaque début d’année, un tableau composé de douze colonnes s’installe dans mon esprit. Chaque mois est ponctué de couleurs différentes avec des événements prévus (mariage, naissance), des dates précises qui reviennent chaque année (anniversaires), deadlines (fin d’une année scolaire ou d’un contrat), et pour finir, des dates événements qui ne sont ni prévues ni récurrentes, mais qui correspondent à des objectifs personnels. Modernisme européen versus modernisme mondial
La collection Sonderbund, créée par plusieurs galeries allemandes, rassemblait au début du xxe siècle 577 peintures des artistes de la scène moderne. Elle a exposé les artistes les plus novateurs, ce qui était inédit et osé en 1912. Le Wallraf-Richartz Museum a décidé de rassembler cette collection pour raviver l’esprit moderne du monde artistique de l’époque. Seule une centaine d’œuvres a pu être regroupée car certaines d’entre elles sont devenues inestimables et il est difficile de les déloger de leur lieu de conservation. Centennial Vortexes
You can blame it on my being an emotional woman if you’d like, I take full responsibility for that, but when I discovered the Wallraf-Richardtz-Museum’s intention to reunite some of the pieces from the 1912 Sonderbund Exhibition of Post-Impressionism through German Expressionism, featuring Van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, Munch, Picasso, Macke, Nolde, Schiele, Signac, etc., I got a bit teary-eyed. Pieces that have been separated (and sometimes out of view) will be reunited in Cologne until year’s end. It’s reminiscent of one’s days in University and coming back so many years later (clearly not 100) to see how much you’ve changed – or in the case of these paintings and sculptures,…
