Der untenstehende Text ist ein Auszug aus dem Die Homosexualität in der Kunst von James Smalls, herausgegeben von Parkstone International. In den 1880er Jahren erweckte Kertbenys griffige neue Bezeichnung die Aufmerksamkeit von Richard von Krafft- Ebing, einem bekannten Sexualwissenschaftler, der das Wort in seinen äußerst populären Psychopathia Sexualis (1886-87), einer umfassenden Enzyklopädie sexueller Abweichungen, verwandte.
