An die vierzig Jahre ist es mittlerweile her, seit der Journalist Legs McNeil die Hausmauern in Downtown New York mit Plakaten tapezierte, auf denen er ankündigte „Watch Out! Punk is coming!“. Nackt, das Gesicht verzerrt von Schmerz, voller Todesangst: wohl kaum ein anderes Bild verdeutlicht die Schrecken des Vietnamkrieges so eindrucksvoll wie das Foto, das die neunjährige Phan Thi Kim Phúc zeigt, wie sie 1972 in Trang Bang, einem Dorf unweit von Saigon, vor einem Napalm-Luftangriff flieht. During my middle school days, I donned black jeans, mid-calf black combat boots, a Ramones T-shirt from Hot Topic, and a studded belt. Thanks to the growing fame of Good Charlotte and Green Day coupled with our young, impressionable minds, everyone at my school flocked the racks of Hot Topic (a rock-inspired clothing store) searching for the Punk look. ALWAYS Win the War
Now, I’m not one to try and court controversy, but it has occurred to me that the act of war is just good business (for the winners anyway). Let’s take war crimes, death tolls, injuries, post-traumatic stress, and dubious reasons for inciting wars out of the equation for a moment. Instead, look at the opening up of jobs in the military forces. This means that unemployment figures go down, levels of education go up (excellent military and civilian training is provided in all manner of subjects), nationwide happiness is on the up (again, primarily for the winning side), and if we stick to the “to the victor the spoils” philosophy…

Matisse pasó la mayor parte de su vida intentando buscar la verdad. Para él la verdad estaba escondida tras la simplificación de las líneas y la combinación de colores. Por este motivo se dedicaba a estudiar sus propias obras y repetirlas con el objetivo de mejorar su técnica en cada nuevo cuadro que completaba. No son pocos los que han realizado series y copias de sus cuadros, pero es significativo que Matisse buscara no sólo comparar la luz o sus efectos sobre un determinado objeto, sino superarse individualmente con cada obra, alcanzar el cuadro verdadero, la perfección total.

Die jungen „Wilden“ erobern das Stillleben
Bei dem Gedanken an die Gattung „Stillleben“ kommen mir Früchte, totes Wildbret auf einem Silbertablett, verstaubte alten Vasen auf dem Dachboden oder farblich in Altrosé getauchte Blumensträuße in den Sinn. Alles künstlerisch wertvoll auf einem Tisch angeordnet und vom Künstler in einer technischen Meisterleistung klassisch und der Natur getreu auf die Leinwand gebracht. Hier und da gibt es interessante Details zu entdecken, und über die Symbolischen Bedeutung wird es sogar spannend. Doch die inhaltliche Wiederholung der abgebildeten Objekte wirkt mitunter emüdent auf den Betrachter und irgendwann ist das nächste Stillleben „nur“ noch schön anzuschauen. I grew up about an hour outside of Philadelphia – a hub of culture, art, and United States history. Being introduced to the arts and science (I still, in my late twenties, love to touch things in the Franklin Institute) at a young age, Auguste Rodin’s sculptures are amongst my earlier memories. I always stared at them the longest and hardest, waiting for them to breathe. Andy Warhol est sans doute le peintre qui symbolise le plus l’art américain aux yeux des Européens. Aujourd’hui Barack Obama est devenu le symbole de l’Amérique contemporaine. Comment s’empêcher de leur trouver des points communs ? Obama, président démocrate tout juste réélu, proche du peuple et issu des minorités sociales. Warhol, fils d’émigrés d’Europe de l’est, maladif et isolé par la société étant enfant.
