    Rococo

    February 22, 2022 / 0 Comments

Deriving from the French word rocaille, in reference to the curved forms of shellfish, and the Italian barocco, the French created the term ‘Rococo’. Appearing at the beginning of the 18th century, it rapidly spread to the whole of Europe. Extravagant and light, Rococo responded perfectly to the spontaneity of the aristocracy of the time. In many aspects, this art was linked to its predecessor, Baroque, and it is thus also referred to as late Baroque style.

    Shelley’s Art Musings – L’atelier mystérieux d’Anselm Kiefer à Barjac

    November 26, 2019 / 0 Comments

Shelley’s Art Musings – Anselm Kiefer’s mysteriöses Studio in Barjac

    November 21, 2019 / 0 Comments

Shelley’s Art Musings – Anselm Kiefer’s Mysterious Studio in Barjac

    November 18, 2019 / 0 Comments

I recently wrote about Anselm Kiefer, which if you didn’t catch the article you can find it here.  I talk about how very interesting the artist is, and about his work and background. Kiefer’s work has risen in popularity since an exhibition at the Royal Academy on 2014, where he has also received an honorary academician, but his art can quite often leave people scratching their heads as to the meaning. This isn’t particularly helped by the artist himself, as he feels art can be difficult for the audience and the creator alike, not always leading to a conclusive meaning, and that you should find something different in it each…

Shelley’s Art Musings – Delacroix Sexist?

    September 27, 2018 / 0 Comments

It’s an iconic and powerfully strong image, isn’t it. Lady Liberty leading the charge of freedom, in what is known as Delacroix’s most famous painting, but the symbolism and composition of the piece have opened debates around sexism and imagery. Delacroix was notorious for his dramatic paintings, but audiences found his topics and depictions rather hard to stomach, as the scenes are overly violent, too grand, oversized and overpowering in the response that they almost demand. Delacroix was a leading name in French Romanticism, born in 1798 he was educated at Lycée Louis-le-Grand, and at the Lycée Pierre Corneille in Rouen, where he immersed himself in the classics and…

    Impressions du monde flottant

    April 28, 2016 / 0 Comments

    The Brown Fairy

    June 30, 2014 / 0 Comments

Nicknamed ‘la fée brune’ (the brown fairy), opium may be less colourful than its friend absinthe, ‘the green fairy’, but it is no less intriguing. Imported from China by sailors in the 19th century, it became widely used in brothels in the port cities of France. But it wasn’t long before this ‘midnight oil’ became the fashionable drug of choice in the French capital. In the glorious years of the Parisian belle époque and then afterwards in the Golden Twenties (or as the French called them, les années folles, the ‘mad years’) opium use seized the artistic circles of society. Infamous opium users include Charles Baudelaire and André Malraux, who…
