Shelley’s Art Musings – Spotlight on D*Face
I am a massive fan of street art. In fact, alongside artworks about myths and legends, it is probably one of my favourite genres. It’s versatile and edgy, and an ever-changing landscape within the art world. It brings art to the masses who see art as something that is stuck in galleries, and above all else it brings colour to urban areas which could essentially be all concrete. D*Face (Dean Stockton), was born in 1978 in England, and until 2008 his identity as a street artist was kept under wraps, as he didn’t feel that his audience needed to know his identity to appreciate his work. You can see some of the early D*Face…

David Hockney Pulls Out His Mushroom Trip
With Amsterdam just a stone’s throw away from his native England, there’s no way David Hockney didn’t take weekend trips to gather a little inspiration. With his landscapes breathing and ever-so-subtly undulating, Hockney has, in his art work, rather astutely recreated the kind of mushroom trip that the majority of festival-goers revel in: a magical connection with those insanely charming and huggable trees. Seemingly familiar, the works trick the viewer into recalling memories of frolics in the woods (both authentic and false memories), the works play on vivid colour, scale and distance, and leading lines to push our psyches into the surreal. Reminiscent of A Scanner Darkly the line between…

In Still Life We Trust: Audubon to Warhol
“Surprising” isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when I utter the words “Still Life.” In fact, it tempts me to hit the snooze button and enter autopilot mode. Where’s the passion, where’s the energy? Where’s the erotic force? After all, didn’t someone once say that all art is about sex? However, once again, I have been shown my ignorant ways because as it happens, still life paintings do have personality, and an American one at that. (Please don’t take my citizenship away). The Philadelphia Museum of Art’s new exhibition Audubon to Warhol: The Art of American Still Life, unearths the uniquely American history that can be traced…

Rad fads & turbulent times
We might all be able to agree that most of the world is a mess. The Americas and Europe have taken a ginormous step back in terms of production, innovation, and general flourishing. Many of our nations and states are in obscene debt which appears to be stagnant or rising and there is no end in sight. So then, what should be next? Vampires and Zombies aren’t getting us anywhere

Where Did It All Go Wrong?
David Bowie: Musician, Idol, Icon. In March of this year he surprised everyone with the unexpected, yet welcome, news that he was releasing his 24th album, The Next Day – the first to be released since 2003. So, bearing this in mind, as well as giving a big shout-out to London’s Victoria & Albert Museum for hosting a spectacular exhibition based on this rock legend, what has Bowie’s legacy been thus far? Let’s look at today’s popular music – Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Adele, One Direction, Justin Bieber, Mumford & Sons, Muse, Marilyn Manson, and The Script, to name but a few. With some of these artists, it is relatively easy…
