Bonnard, Vuillard, Roussel, und Denis, die bekanntesten Vertreter der Nabis-Gruppe, revolutionierten den Geist der dekorativen Techniken während einer der produktivsten Perioden der französischen Malerei. Beeinflusst von Odilon Redon, Puvis de Chavannes, der populären Volkskunst und japanischen Holzschnitten, waren diese Postimpressionisten vor allem eine Gruppe von Freunden, die dem gleichen kulturellen Umfeld angehörten. Le XIXe siècle, éternelle chronique de l’art français
Le xixe siècle français : siècle de l’art de vivre à la française. Qui ne pense pas tout de suite à Toulouse-Lautrec et au monde des bordels de Montmartre, à la forte consommation d’absinthe qui, en un sens, développait l’esprit créatif, à la grande époque du Moulin Rouge, aux cafés-concerts et à Pigalle. Révolution, industrialisation, bourgeoisie, tels sont les mots qui nous viennent à l’esprit. Mais il faut surtout penser à la Modernité, aux changements des mœurs.
