Der französische Nationalfeiertag ist der Jahrestag der Erstürmung der Bastille am 14. Juli 1789, einem Wendepunkt der Französischen Revolution. Die als Bastille bekannte mittelalterliche Rüstkammer, Festung und das politische Gefängnis repräsentierten die königliche Autorität im Zentrum von Paris. Das Gefängnis enthielt zur Zeit der Erstürmung nur sieben Insassen, wurde aber von den Revolutionären als Symbol für den Machtmissbrauch der Monarchie angesehen; sein Fall war der Brennpunkt der Französischen Revolution.

La fête nationale française est l’anniversaire de la prise de la Bastille le 14 juillet 1789, un tournant de la Révolution française. L’armurerie, la forteresse et la prison politique médiévales connues sous le nom de Bastille représentaient l’autorité royale au centre de Paris. The Storming of the Bastille, a Turning Point of the French Revolution
The French National Day is the anniversary of Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789, a turning point of the French Revolution. The medieval armory, fortress, and political prison known as the Bastille represented royal authority in the centre of Paris. The prison contained only seven inmates at the time of its storming but was seen by the revolutionaries as a symbol of the monarchy’s abuse of power; its fall was the flashpoint of the French Revolution.
