    Felix Vallotton im Rampenlicht (1865-1925)

    October 18, 2019 / 0 Comments

    October 16, 2019 / 0 Comments

    Spotlight on Felix Vallotton (1865-1925)

    October 3, 2019 / 0 Comments

Exhibition: Felix Vallotton – Painter of disquiet Date: 29th October to 26th January 2020 Venue: At The Met Fifth Avenue The text below is the excerpt of the book Félix Vallotton, written by Nathalia Brodskaïa, published by Parkstone International. That very strange Vallotton – that was how Thadée Natanson, the publisher of La Revue Blanche magazine, referred to the friend of his youth. In fact, Félix Vallotton did not bare his soul immediately, even to close friends. In the artistic milieu of Paris to which they both belonged, there were no ordinary people, but even among them, Vallotton stood out as being a most unusual individual. The reasons lay not…

[Part 2/3] Cubism: The Bermuda Triangle

    October 10, 2017 / 0 Comments

From ancient history until the end of the 18th century, artwork was evaluated according to its content. The material from which the artwork was made played a subordinate role. The premise was that an idea in its most complete and ideal state is Pablo Picasso immaterial; thus, to a great extent, the material is secondary to the idea that it is helping the artist to express. Materials were placed in the hierarchical order that was determined by how little they would impinge upon the purity of the artistic premise. Only in the 20th century did the aesthetics relating to materials take hold. Material justice now became one of the criteria…

The Joy of Drawing: The Doodles of Great Masters

    August 29, 2016 / 1 Comment

In a way, the sketch is one of the purest elements to art – the first inklings of the idea to something great, and at times the most raw and intense aspect. Painters, sculptors and even contemporary multi-media artists will often lay down their visions on a simple pen and paper production. As a powerful and beloved medium, drawings are the skeleton to an artwork and have influenced and changed artists’ lives. Most artists will sketch an idea out, often multiple times to get everything right. Unless you’re Bob Ross, and then you just go for it because there are no mistakes in your world. But these sketches, quick or…

    May 11, 2015 / 0 Comments

    The Changing Face of Vallotton

    October 15, 2013 / 0 Comments

Before photography came along paintings were undoubtedly the best way of providing a lasting imprint of a person’s physical appearance. It’s always confused and delighted me how dabs of paint on a canvas can be transformed into a likeness of a person, and at the hands of the best artists, can reveal a true sense of temperament and character. And due to our natural predisposition to study faces, it is perhaps one of the hardest painterly tasks to get right (one only needs look at the sincere but botched ‘Monkey Jesus’ Fresco to see how wrong it can go).

Vallotton: One of Art’s Greatest Over-Achievers

    August 28, 2013 / 3 Comments

Félix Vallotton is perhaps the chameleon of the Nabis era. With a traditional start in academic and portrait painting, Vallotton mastered printmaking, portrait painting, wood engraving, Nabis-style genre scenes and nudes, and then moved on to Realism before leading the way for the New Objectivity movement. He did not stop at painting, however, but tried his hand at writing no fewer than eight plays and three novels. Whilst these may not have been the most significant or even best-selling tomes of their time, it was still a remarkable achievement. After adding landscapes, still life painting, and sculptures to his already impressive repertoire, the resulting impression of this artist is that…
