Der untenstehende Text ist ein Auszug aus dem Die Kunst Indiens von Vincent A. Smith, herausgegeben von Parkstone International. Beim Thema Indienforschung muss man wegen der hier zu behandelnden enormen Materialvielfalt eine deutliche Zurückhaltung üben. Angesichts dieser Komplexität habe ich mich auf eher subjektive Ergebnisse gestützt, die auf meinen persönlichen Erfahrungen und Interpretationen beruhen und daher mehr oder weniger unwissenschaftlich sind. Spricht man von Indien, einem Land, das mit seiner enormen Größe dem Betrachter mehr Schönheit bietet als viele andere Länder der Welt, so ist ein beschreibender Tonfall durchaus gerechtfertigt.
