Shelley’s Art Musings – Spotlight on Rembrandt

    August 17, 2018 / 0 Comments

When you look at art throughout the ages, there is nothing quite so extravagant as the late renaissance moving through to the Baroque period. The artwork is indulgent and highly detailed, with every aspect of the frame covered.  Rembrandt was known as a master of this field, producing elaborate self-portraits and depictions of biblical scenes embedded his name in the art world for the ages. Born Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn in 1606, he was the son of a miller and was able to attend a Latin school.  At the age of 14, he began to study at the University of Leiden, but finding academia was not for him, he took…

    Rembrandt Van Rijn

    May 9, 2016 / 0 Comments

    Rembrandt, the First Modern Painter

    October 26, 2015 / 0 Comments

Just outside Amsterdam there lives an old, well-known, and respected Dutch painter. He has worked hard throughout his life—but he has only produced, as far as the world knows, a few drawings and one large canvas which is in the National Museum. I went to see his second major work, a triptych of the war. We spoke of war, old age, the vocation of the painter. He opened the door of his studio to let me go in first. The huge canvases were white. After years of work he had that day calmly destroyed them. The second major work of his life was still unfinished. The point of this story…

    Drawing Towards the Limelight

    April 17, 2015 / 0 Comments

Often thought of as a secondary art form, less important than painting, the art of drawing is beginning to enjoy the limelight. Museums around the world are mounting exhibitions focusing on the underrated art of draughtsmanship, and Parkstone’s new book 1000 Drawings of Genius showcases the finest works that this genre has to offer. A genius is defined as “a person with exceptional ability”. And certainly there are those famous draughtsman of yore whose work seems highly worthy of this title. Traditionally the figureheads that spring to mind include the classicists da Vinci, Michelangelo, and later, Rembrandt. The work of these men does seem beyond the stretch of the average…
